Grading and Tip Testing Info

What are Tip Testings and Gradings? How it works:

Tip Testing

The Karate programs require a minimum of two (2) classes per week if you wish to participate in our grading cycles, training less will result in the possibility the student is unable to retain the information required to be demonstrated in the gradings.

Tip testing in an in house assessment free of charge which ensures the students are keeping up with the required technique and help our instructors ensure they are on track. It also allows early intervention if we see the student falling behind and we are able to recommend some extra training with us or at home online practice assistance, it also ensures your child is set up for success come grading time! Tip tests begin 8 weeks before the grading date with 4 tip tests being held. These dates are posted around the dojo straight after the completion of the previous Grading Cycle. In order for a Karate student to be eligible for grading the student must successfully attend and receive three (3) tips on the same side of their karate belt. If a student gets 2 tips from the previous grading cycle these can not be used towards the next grading as the tip attained represent different moves from their current cycle. Students also need to have attended the MINIMUM amount of training classes within the cycle.

There is a tablet placed at the entrance of the where you must find your name and sign in your attendance for your journey to the next level.

Tip tests one (1) - Students are tested on Stances, Blocks and Attacks

Tip test two (2) - Students are tested on Kicks, Body Control (rolls/breakfalls) and Self Defence

Tip test three (3) - Students are tested on Kata

Catch up tip test— Students are tested on all the moves needed for this cycle which were broken down in tips 1, 2 and 3.

Catch up tip tests are for students with 2 tips, who either missed or failed a tip test. This is not an opportunity for a student to catch up on all three (3) tips in one lesson.

Tip tests are held 2 weeks apart for tip test 1, 2 and 3 with catch up tip test held one week after that.

Once you have attained three (3) black tips on the same side of your belt and have completed your minimum amount of training classes we advise you to complete and submit your Grading Form immediately to reception to ensure you don’t forget and miss out.

Gradings

Gradings are usually conducted every third month rotating on a 12 week cycle. Grading dates are posted in the dojo 12 weeks prior to grading. You must have had all your nights accumulated, and for karate students all three tips. Gradings cost $60 which is paid when submitting the grading form. Please note gradings will not always fall within your normal class time, please ensure you know your grading day and time prior to submitting the form!

Grading is a formal testing where the student will need to competently demonstrate all moves required in their current grading cycle. Most gradings are done in the dojo with the exception of some Advanced High Rank belts which will be required to attend grading at an external venue.

Once you pass your grading, you will be awarded your new belt and a certificate. YOU MUST WEAR FULL UNIFORM (Black gi, belt and pants for karate students) & if you are grading for Advanced Yellow or higher you must bring your full sparring gear. If you don’t have uniform/sparring gear at the grading you will be unable to grade.

We hope this helps you understand our promotional belt system and if you still have questions please see any of our friendly staff!
